June 10, 2019
According to IMDb (Internet Movie Database), US television series, Chernobyl has hit the highest ever spot of TV rankings ever! The five episode HBO tv series currently has a 9.7/10 rating in comparison to Breaking Bad (9.5), Game of Thrones (9.3) and The Wire (9.3).
Based on the tragic Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the binge-worthy series tells the horrific story of the disaster, its impact on the people of Pripyat, the aftermath and investigation. On April 26, 1986, the number four nuclear reactor exploded at the Chernobyl plant near the city of Pripyat, Ukraine (formerly Soviet Union) that led to death, mass evacuation and life-long consequences. During the disaster more than 30 people died, however the UN predicted 4,000 deaths whereas Greenpeace put the death toll from radiation-caused cancers to 100,000.
After the disaster, the Soviet government tried to cover up the cause and extent of disaster by misinforming the public. Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin said “You can pretend that the truth is malleable. But the truth doesn’t care. The truth will do what it does. The nuclear reactor in Chernobyl didn’t care that the Soviets insisted it was flawless. It just did what it did. I want people to come to grips to that. We have to learn how to think critically and allow ourselves to change our minds to incorporate the truth.”
Have you watched the TV series yet? And would you be a “dark tourist” and visit Chernobyl?
